Although the whole character is originally iconic, I used the Shuowen's decomposition for the sake of the apparent phonetic component. The other component is just a corruption that is now written like 兮 but has nothing to do with it otherwise. I'm not sure how to mark that "form only" sort of relation.

For consistency, and because the origin is unclear anyway, maybe all that should be said is the usual phonosemantic etymology.

Adding the component meaning to the gloss, even though this is only used as a sound component except for once.

This is a case of the phonetic component also being the original form of the character before it loaned its sound to other unrelated meanings. Hopefully all of these cases can be described in a consistent way.

Usually the relation of the meaning component is obvious, but this is definitely a case of "Based on an original meaning that isn't used anymore". I added the necessary historical context.

I couldn't find the source of the "revolve" meaning in Unihan. The original meaning is well sourced.

闑 has a reading with all the same GY parameters as 臬 on EDOC, and has data from Baxter 2011, so I filled that in for the old pronunciation. This character is thought by some to be a variant of this one. Stil doesn't look like 自 is a sound component though.

自 is used for sound according to 《字源》, although 許慎 said it referred to the pole being at nose height.

I am not sure what "上欲出冂" means, maybe it actually implies that 冖 is a ceiling? It doesn't look the same as other instances of 冖.

Phonosemantic compound with a rarely used original meaning.
